Prime Reactions Review – Dragon Ball Super Episode 117 (Universe Survival Arc)

Wait, the eyecatches are permanently Ultra Instinct Goku now? Hooray… more Goku!

Vegeta trying to activate Ultra Instinct by taking hits from supposed fodder? Vegeta knows Goku got it from fighting Jiren and Kefla, right? This guy isn’t even a match for base Vegeta. It’s too bad Vegeta didn’t have someone like Toppo to try this with in the last few epis… oh.

So Mcrib’s big transformation was just that: a big transformation. Then again, that binding rose is the most competent thing I’ve seen her do in this tournament and that’s in her normal state. What an incredibly useful move that she conveniently neglected to use until now. Restrict an opponent’s movements? Why would she ever want to do that? Mcrib ended up amounting to nothing despite her long tenure. Just like Kefla, her supposed giant increase in power didn’t even eliminate anyone as collateral damage.

I would’ve been pretty mad if 18 got eliminated by being stuck in that stupid rose. Though I’m not too crazy about how she won either. Not that it’s mandatory but one problem is 18 doesn’t have any unique techniques whereas 17 at least has his energy shield. It’s like they wrote “18 wins” in the script and nobody really knew how so she simply punches through Mcrib’s punches. This was 18’s one big win before she inevitably gets eliminated herself so I wish it was better than a not-Super Dragon Fist.

While 17 and 18 were coordinating and I understand they aren’t the ones from Future Trunks’ timeline, I’d have liked to see some synchronized tandem attacks/Accel Dance.

Is “You can’t dodge in mid-air.” Dragon Ball’s “But you still take damage.” from Yu-Gi-Oh!? Not only is it fairly easy to blast yourself out of the way, but it really makes the other universe’s aces (Kefla’s an ace at this point) seem extra incompetent.

More Gohan and Piccolo vs Namekians next time. Hoping that non-starter concludes as well. Goku fighting fodder technically has no tension but at least he’s tired unless he once again gets less tired by fighting…

Ultimate Reflections:
It wasn’t a bad episode but I wish it was better. Back to back eliminations of some very divisive screentime hogging characters should make some people happy. It feels like a step towards the end if we didn’t hear that this might last until March…
